A 'Big Time' Breakfast... GYM SHOE DRIVE: STEP UP! Our homeless guests walk miles every day, so having good walking/gym shoes is a need. Each Maundy/Holy Thursday, Carpenter’s Place hosts a special event where every guest who walks through our doors receives a new pair of gym shoes, along with 2 pairs of socks and foot powder. We continue to give shoes out through summer. If you are able to donate NEW gym shoes, your support would be greatly appreciated. Our main need is men’s sizes between 9 and 12. The homeless count in our community... The Annual Homeless Count started at 3:00 pm Monday both in the Stateline and across the country. It will run until 3:00 pm Tuesday. This process is done to make sure every homeless member of the community is accounted for. With these numbers increasing, organizations such as Carpenter's Place have never been more important. THANKFUL FOR A SPECIAL DONOR Corbin, who is in 3rd grade, was extremely concerned about all those who didn’t have a home to keep warm and were sleeping out on the streets. He told his mom he wanted to put his concerns into action by using his Christmas money to purchase items to help the homeless. Thanks to Corbin’s generosity, Carpenter’s Place received 19 blankets, 29 pairs of knit gloves, and 17 knit hats, as well as numerous hand and feet warmers. Our guests will be extremely grateful to receive these items! Corbin doesn’t plan to stop giving. Since dropping off his donation, he has thought of other items to donate and is even getting his whole family involved. We give thanks to Providence! After a frigidly cold weekend on the streets, we had a large crowd for breakfast yesterday. Everyone enjoyed a delicious hot breakfast of breakfast sandwiches, hash browns and hot chocolate prepared and served by Providence Baptist Church. We are extremely grateful for your help in caring for our guests. A small gesture of a hot meal has a significant impact on those we serve. One of the many ways Carpenter’s Place provides life essentials and restores dignity to the unhoused is through laundry services. Not only does society judge you based on your appearance, but we judge ourselves. Our outward appearance directly ties to our self-esteem and confidence. Subconsciously, wearing dirty clothes affects how we carry ourselves, lowers self-esteem, and deletes self-worth. Additionally, regular washing of clothes helps to remove any bacteria, dirt, fleas, mites and other irritants or infections. It can also help reduce infectious diseases, such as diarrheic disease, respiratory infections, and skin infections.   Our laundry volunteers complete roughly eight hundred and thirty-four loads of laundry each year. Yesterday, thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois, we replaced our worn out washers and dryers with three energy efficient commercial-grade washers and dryers. The new machines will require less maintenance and allow is to provide additional guests with laundry services.   Thank you to the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois for building self-esteem and providing dignity to those experiencing homelessness. For hundreds of our homeless, and families in crisis, Carpenter’s Place offers sanctuary, warm clothing, a hot meal, and shelter from the elements. Amazing Generosity! During the cold weather months we rely heavily on the generosity of the community to help us keep our guests warm during the cold nights on the streets. Diane, a frequent donor of these items, arrived last week, her car packed with 68 coats, three boxes of hand warmers and several boxes of socks, hats, gloves, and boots. It’s an amazing feeling handing out these items that someone desperately needs. Not only do we get to witness the gratitude of our guests but also the love and compassion of our donors.
