Sharing God's love with inner city children through Biblical principles, with spiritual and physical solutions.

About us

Rock House Kids is a 501(C)3 outreach organization that seeks to feed Rockford's inner city children physically, spiritually and emotionally. Since 1999, we care for kids ages 6-18, by providing a safe, warm and nurturing environment, four evenings a week. During our evening programs, we serve hot meals, and enjoy music and instructional time. Then the children break into smaller age groups guided by compassionate, adult volunteers who teach basic life skills, encourage the kids to do their best in school, and develop positive goals for their futures. Some of the topics taught are manners, purity, and gang avoidance and prevention. At the end of each evening, the children leave with a bag of kid-friendly, non-perishable food items. At various times throughout the year, the kids participate in movie nights, swimming and camping trips, and they’ve even tried water skiing, thanks to the Rockford Ski Broncs! Seasonally, we provide the children with important items such as coats, shoes, boots, socks, hats and mittens, hygiene supplies, blanket and pillow, flashlight, school supplies, and even birthday and Christmas gifts.

Rock House Kids is celebrating 25 years of ministry to Rockford's inner-city kids in 2024! Our vision at RHK is to meet the physical, emotional, and educational needs of inner-city children by instilling hope in a SAFE, Christ-centered environment. When our kids feel safe, they can relax and enjoy just being kids which, of course, means fun is mandatory! Over the years, one ingredient in our evening program that hasn't changed is always to incorporate plenty of games, laughter, dancing and surprises. Our kids have learned a lot at RHK in the past 25 years, and had a lot of fun in the process. Who said learning couldn't be fun? 🙃

We had a wonderful time celebrating our incredible team of volunteers last Thursday night. Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was held at Central Christian Church. The theme was "My Lighthouse - Let Your Light Shine" and featured a delicious meal, words of encouragement from some of our "veteran" volunteers, and even a sing-a-long. We are so blessed to work alongside each and everyone of them. There is no way we could effectively serve our kids (nearly 250 every week) without them. Our volunteers ROCK!

My name is Grace. I currently work cleaning homes (being my own boss is nice) and help lead at the Front Desk in a Chiropractic office. I've been volunteering at Rock House Kids for about 14 years as one of the lead teachers on Monday nights, along with my sister, Hope. When I was 14, I loved serving and helping those less fortunate than myself, so I looked for a place to volunteer that was spreading God's love to adults and children. I learned of Rock House Kids through Dola Gregory, who gave me one of their cards. I looked up the organization and read about what they did and what they taught; it was exactly what I was looking for. I knew I had to call. I love working with kids because it takes me out of my comfort zone. As I teach them about God's word, I learn along with them and learn more about myself along the way. It's challenging, but teaching a child and pouring into them brings so much joy. Challenges are good for us; they help us grow more if we let them help shape us. As I look back, it's pretty amazing to know I was able to share in so many kids' lives, teaching them how much they were loved by us at RHK and, more importantly, by God. I've missed out on some pretty cool opportunities by not acting on them when I had the chance. Everyone has something to give and gifts to help meet someone else's needs. Why not share those at Rock House Kids? We all can learn to give of ourselves more. We are made to be part of a community. Let's learn to serve one another better, and as we do so, we honor God. Happy volunteering!
